以色列在7日清晨遭到伊斯兰激进组织哈玛斯（Hamas）大规模突袭，造成大量伤亡，后续以色列展开“钢铁之剑”行动反制，以色列总理纳坦雅胡（Benjamin Netanyahu）也下令召集后备部队，要让哈玛斯“付出代价”。
此外，有民众目击以色列战车部队不断往加萨（Gaza）附近集结，并看到战车进驻边境城市。
综合外媒报道，以色列国防军（IDF）7日开始大规模集结兵力，后备役军人也纷纷接受召集，为“战争”做准备。军方表示，预备役人员正在部署到加萨边境，约有4个师的规模，将与已经部署在该地的另外35个营会合。
以国边境城市包括斯德洛特（Sderot）、奥法基姆（Ofakim）及贝耶里（Be'eri）在哈玛斯突袭之初被控制，多位平民被枪杀，或是扣押为人质，民众在家紧闭家门不敢外出。
以军表示，在南部城镇苏法（Sufa）、卡法阿札（Kfar Aza）及凯林沙洛姆（Kerem Shalom）等地都有击毙哈玛斯份子的纪录，先前被哈玛斯控制的雷伊姆军事基地（Re'im military base）也被收复。
以军8日凌晨提到，纳哈尔步兵旅指挥官斯坦柏格上校（Jonathan Steinberg）7日上午在凯林沙洛姆的衝突中身亡，是目前为止官阶最高的死亡军人。
